True Sojourners has partnered with local Kenyan families to serve AIDS orphans in a Kenyan slum called Mwiki.
Originally called Family Focus, the idea of this project is to help grandmothers or other community guardians provide stable care for the children outside of the normal orphanage model, which is insufficient for long-term community and stability for children once they reach young adulthood.
Grandmothers and other guardians in this program receive training in small business development, and some small funds to kickstart their initiatives. Children receive school supplies and nutritious foods (like vegetables or milk) beyond their normal ration of just beans and maize.
Our goal is to see each child in this slum finish high school in a community that cares for them, then to see young adults working hard to give back to their families and neighbors.
